The atmosphere in hospitals is generally uninviting – making patients anxious. Using colourful and dynamic light can make the environment seem far less clinical. As the lighting comforts and calms the patient, medical staff members are able to make a better diagnosis… more quickly… and often with less sedation. The more relaxed the patient, the better the quality and efficiency of their treatment.
The new Ingenia 3.0 Tesla MRI system at the ‘Life Little Company of Mary Hospital (LCM)’ in Pretoria is an example of how effective the combination of state-of-the-art technology and scientific insights, with a people-centric approach, can be.
- Lighting can be used to improve patient comfort, mood and quality of sleep.
- MR scanning can be daunting and appropriate lighting can make it more pleasant for staff and patients alike.
- ‘Ambient Experience’ is a methodology employed to achieve clinical and emotional benefits from lighting.
