Chapter 12: LonWorks

Local Operating Network (LonWorks) is a complete open solution for implementing interoperable control networks. Although it has become the de factor standard in the field of building control, it has been less successful in entering the arena of industrial control systems.

The major perceived benefit of LonWorks is that it can be used on virtually any media, wired or wireless, and its success in building control applications is due, in part, to its ability to make use of existing electrical wiring within the building. Other benefits include: peer-to-peer communication; control and communication realised in a single low-cost chip; and the fact that it is an off-the-shelf solution complete with tools and components, training and support, third party integration and development expertise.
